선우평화재단 2주년 기념식과 2007년 수상단체 <재미동포전국연합회>에게 주는 1만5천달러 시상식은 60여명이
참석한 가운데 로스엔젤레스에서 성황리에 개최되었다. 선우학원 박사의 기념사, 윤길상 회장의 답사, 방희경

[로스엔젤레스=민족통신 이용식 편집위원]제2회 선우평화재단 창립2주년기념식 겸 금년 수상단체에게 주는 시상식은 14일 오전 11시 시내 제이제이그랜드 호텔 볼룸에서 60여명이 참석한 가운데 성대하게 개최되었다.

선우국 사회로 진행된 이날 시상식은 우리 말이 서툰 2세, 3세들의 참여관계로 영어로 진해외었다. 사회자의 가족소개, 노길남 민족통신 대표의 참석자들 소개에 이어 선우학원 박사가 조국반도의 평화와 통일운동의 지난 역사를 회고하며 리승만 목사, 김동수 박사 등 많은 재미동포들이 한반도의 평화와 통일의 험난한 길을 위해 크게 기여해 왔다고 돌아본후 2007년도 <재미동포전국연합회(윤길상 회장)>를 금년도 수상단체로 선정했다고 발표했다.

선우학원 박사는 이날 시상식 기념대회사를 통해 제2차남북정상회담, 6자회담, 그리고 로스엔젤레스에서는 일제 위안부문제 해결을 위한 재미동포활동을 비롯하여 북의 태권도 대표단이 역사적으로 미국을 친선방문하여 대대적인 환영을 받고 있는 시기라고 말하면서 90년대 한반도 위기에서 재미동포들의 역할로 평화분위기로 만든 발자취 등을 소개하면서 선우평화재단의 목적과 취지등에 대해서 설명했다.

주최측은 순서지를 통해 재미동포전국연합회는 동포권익 옹호, 민족문화의 계승 발전, 타민족과의 유대 강화와 조국의 자주적 평화 통일을 추구하는 재미동포단체로서 정부에 비영리단체로 등록되어 있는데 이 단체는 특히 (1)이산가족 상봉 추진: 조국 분단으로 인해 이산의 아픔을 겪고 있는 이들을 위해 혈육 상봉의 기회를 제공하고자 이북 방문단을 구성, 실행하며 이산가족의 아픔을 공동체적 차원에서 치유하고 화해의 장으로 나아갈 수 있도록 돕고 있고, (2)동포들의 기본 인권 옹호: 소수민족으로서 사회적 불이익을 당하지 않기 위해서 타민족과 연대하며 각계 각층 전문 인력과 연결하여 동포들의 인권옹호와 권익 신장에 주력하고 있으며, (3)외세에 의해 남과 북으로 갈라진 지구상의 유일한 분단국가인 조국반도를 자주적으로 평화적으로 민족대단결로 평화통일을 이루기 위해 노력해 왔고, (4)민족문화와 언어 보존 및 발전 사업을 위해 미국에서 성장하는 다음 세대를 위해 그들이 우리 문화와 언어, 역사와 전통을 계승할 수 있도록 민족의식 교육을 위한 지원사업도 전개해 왔고, (5)타민족과의 교류협력 사업으로 반전평화운동에도 연대해 왔다고 평가했다. 특히 금년에는 뉴욕타임스를 통해 일본아베정권의 대북적대시 정책이 잘못되었다는 점을 전면광고로 홍보해 국제사회 평화운동에 기여해 왔고 북미관계 이해를 돕는 활동에 크게 이바지 해 왔다. 하나는 2004년 10월26일자에 미국의 대북정책의 문제점과 우호선린정책의 전환을 촉구하는 내용들을 게재하였고, 2007년 4월27일자에는 일본 아베총리의 미국방문을 계기로 위안부에 대한 과거사를 사죄반성하고 보상해야 한다고 촉구하는 내용을 게재하여 미국 정치인들과 국민들에게 커다란 반향을 불러일으킨 점 등이 높이 평가되었다.

윤길상 재미동포전국연합회 회장은 답사를 통해 "선우학원 박사님 부부는 우리 재미동포사회 진보운동진영에서는 살아있는 고귀한 유산"이라고 전재하면서 재미동포전국연합회를 2007년도 수상단체로 선정해 준데 대하여 감사를드린다고 답사(아래 발표 답사문 참조)했다.

이날 행사를 축하하기 위해 전순태 선생 부인 방희경 여사의 특별축하음악 선물 순서가 참석자들의 뜨거운 박수갈채를 받았다. 그는 선우평화재단 2주년기념식과 수상단체 재미동포전국연합회의 시상을 축하한다면서 3곡의 노래를 선물했다.

뉴욕의 유태영 재미동포전국연합회 상임고문이 축하시를 보내왔고, 리준무 동부지역연합회 회장을 비롯하여 회원들의 축하문, 이병상 서부지역연합회 부회장의 란꽃 선물, 통일맞이 나성포럼의 축하 화환, 민족통신 편집위원들이 각각 축하화환을 보내왔다.

특히 평소때 자주 볼 수 없는 인사들의 참석도 눈에 띄었다. 시카고에서 오영칠 중남부지역 부회장, 이응곤 선생이 직접 참석했고, 국영길 변호사 부부, 남정책 선생부부, 예정웅 선생부부, 홍순호 선생 부부, 정연진 선생, 박신화 목사, 조경미 선생, 정건이 선생, 노길남 선생 부인과 자녀들, 방희경 선생, 이태선 선생 등도 참석해 이날 행사를 축하해 주었다.

Award Acceptance Speech By President Yoon Kil-sang of KANCC Acceptance Speech for the Grant Harold W. and Sonia Shin Sunoo Pace in Korea Foundation October 14, 2007, Los Angeles, CA Kil Sang Yoon 답사하는 윤길상 재미동포전국연합회 회장 Professor Sonia Shin Sunoo, Professor Harold Sunoo, family and friends! Sonia and Harold Sunoo are living legacy of progressive movement within the Korean American community in the States! On behalf of the Korean American National Coordinating Council and her entire membership, I would like to express a deepest gratitude and appreciation to Dr. and Mrs Sunoo and the entire family for their vision to establish Peace in Korea Foundation in the effort to usher autonomous, independent and peaceful reunification of Korea. Furthermore, I feel humbled to represent KANCC to be the sole recipient of Foundation’s 2007 Grant in its second anniversary. When I heard about the Sunoo’s intention to establish such foundation couple years ago, I was deeply moved by their trailblazing, pioneering spirit to return their life time savings to the cause of peace in their homeland. However, I was not surprised at all by what they chose to do in knowing who they are, how they are and what they have tired to do unswervingly all their life. It was1961 when I met first Dr. Sunoo. He had left his home in 1936 escaping the Japanese Colonial oppression and. returned to his homeland divided in 1961 after his asylum in the US over a quarter of century. He offered a course in Plato at the Graduate School of Yonsei University. In the cultural environment of Korea in those days and even now, male figures are so authoritarian and even showed an air of arrogance. But, Dr. Sunoo and his demeanor were so different from the rest of the faculty. As a distinguished professor of rich experience in overseas, he was gentle, considerate and egalitarian. He immediately became a role-model for me to look up. When I talked about this newly arrived professor to my church pastor, who later became my father-in-law, he exclaimed, “Is Sunoo Hakwon home now? Well, even when he was at Aoyama Gakui,Chungsan Hagwon in Japan in late 1930s, he was well known among the students and was very progressive young man.” Another decade passed away. I ran into Dr. Sunoo at 1973 Annual Meeting of the Association of Korean Christian Scholars in North America held in St. Louis, MO. Sicne then, I have watched him as he has exerted his immanent leadership in most of the Korean American movements of democratization of South Korea, of safeguarding the basic rights of Koreans in the US, and of Korean Reunification. When he published in 1994 , an autobiographical description and historical involvement in Korean American progressive movements in the US, that book helped me better understand Dr. Sunoo’s vision and purposes. It offered me true picture of who he is, how he has been, and what he will continue to do to achieve his life long vision and aspiration impregnated by his parents, grandparents and the fate of his beloved country under the Japanese colonial rule, and to usher an autonomous, independent and peaceful reunification of his homeland. At the postscript of the book, he shares with the readers the reason why he wrote the book: “I want my grandchildren to know the history of their grand father’s vision and the long sufferings of Korea and her people, Korean Americans struggles for the autonomous independence of Korea from all the dominance of foreign powers” Dr. Sunoo and his gracious spouse have lived so far for achieving such vision. And, now for all the “grandchildren of the Sunoos, both biological and national, to continue the struggle for the true independence of their homeland, Korea in the years to come, and in the fervent desire for his “grandchildren and their children” to continue the struggles to usher the peaceful One Korea, they have chosen to offer their life time savings to establish the Peace in Korea Foundation. As the representative of KANCC, the sole recipient of 2007 Grant, I feel an awesome challenge and responsibility to be accountable to the Foundation in fiduciary, to KANCC and to the wider Korean American community. What do we learn from what the Sunoo family does? Have some of us also built up some equity through what we have earned through our labors in this land? What are we going to do with them? Is there any possibility for us to follow the Sunno’s foot step by offering what we have to the cause of the Peace in Korea Foundation? I stand here this moment with such questions and challenge.
